Herbal Healing

This blog is dedicated to herbal healing and other natural health remedies. In an attempt to deepen my own knowledge, I will share information on a variety of herbs, focusing largely on easy to find Western plants, as well as methods for preparing herbal medicines and natural beauty treatments. I am not a certified herbalist, licensed cosmetologist, or physician, so please use the information on this blog at your own risk! I've been an aspiring herbalist for several years, and I hope to finally get my certification sometime this year.

I also have questions about the brown sugar body scrub: what is the benefit of using organic brown sugar and organic olive oil? Also, can this be made without the cinnamon essential oil and have the same effect? It's much easier when I can simply gather things that I already have in the house...

Using organic products on your body is ideal because they are free of harsh chemicals and pesticicides that can be detrimental to your skin! If you don’t have organic ingredients, don’t worry about it; it’s perfectly acceptable to use what you have on hand.  Also, like I said before, there is so much room for experimentation when making scrubs - don’t worry about following it to a T!  The cinnamon in the recipe was used for an uplifting, stimulating effect, but you can use whatever scent you want, or no scent at all… you’ll still be left with silky soft skin from the sugar and oil.  :)

Hi! A couple weeks ago you posted a recipe for a Cinnamon & Brown Sugar Body Scrub. Cinnamon isn't really my "flavour", so I was wondering if you had a lemon version of this, or could tell me what parts of that recipe to substitute with lemon based ingredients? The recipes I'm finding online do not seem very natural (Ivory hand soap is not what I want in my scrub!).

The thing about scrubs is that there is SO much room for interpretation and it’s really hard to go wrong.  Instead of using cinnamon essential oil, use lemon or any other scent of essential oil.  You can use regular white sugar instead of brown, or even use salt! The carrier oil is also up to you - use olive oil if that’s what you have on hand.  :)  Don’t be afraid to try out different combinations, get messy, and have fun.
